Why sign up for the club dues full payment plan? Enjoy the many benefits available to club members on the full-payment plan. A one time fee of only $50 covers all meetings, plus discounts for DB15 special events. This year members received benefits that totaled well over the dues amount. Substantial discounts were provided for the TAP NY beer fest trip, the Newark Bears baseball outing, the NJ Brewers Festival, and the Victorian Dinner. | September Meeting Notes by Dan Hodge Meeting commenced at 4:15 PM. Meeting was a tasting of Oktoberfest beers that had not been previously sampled at a DB15 meeting. Members present were: Dan Hodge, Brian Lynch, Dan Soboti, DJ Soboti, Vince Capano, Tom Nooney, Faith Frappiano, Livingston Hinckley, John Reed, Doug Vohden, Chris Johnson, Mark Ferguson, Brandon Einhorn, Glenn DeLuca, Andrew MacKenzie, Raffi Manjeekian Non members present were: Graham Hill, Peter Shea, Nick Moramoraco, Joe Vandevusse, and Matt Chuchla. 18 Oktoberfest beers were sampled, unnumbered and blind, with each attendee rating them from zero to ten. Results were: 1. Schlafly 2. Moerlein’s Fifth and Vine 3. Dundee, Great Lakes, Dominion, Duclaw (tie) 7.Flying Dog, Thirsty Dog (tie) 9. Blue Point, Brooklyn (tie) 11.Moat Mountain, Shiner, Blue Mountain (tie) 14.Stoudt’s, Yuengling (tie) 16.Sly Fox, Casco Bay (tie) 18. Jack’s Abbey Copper Legend The tasting of 18 beers is a new record for a DB15 meeting. Note - the last IPA tasting included 32 beers but the format had each member sampling up to 17. Beers sampled after the meeting were: 1. Chris Johnson’s Saison w/ London Ale yeast 2. Chris Johnson’s Saison w/ Belle Saison yeast 3. Mark Ferguson’s Centennial IPA 4. Mark Ferguson’s Rye IPA 5. Graham Hill’s Jenni the Red Skullsplitter 6. Graham Hill’s 80 Shilling 7. Graham Hill’s Gose 8. Dragon Lady Doppelbock provided by Vince Capano Meeting ended about 6:45 PM ------------- Oktoberfest More than 6 million people from around the world attend the event every year. That original gathering was held to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. Raise your stein and say "prost!" before knocking back a lager at Oktoberfest. Another popular phrase is "zum wohl" (tzoom-vohl), meaning "to your health." All beer served at the Oktoberfest tents must be from one of Munich's six breweries—Paulaner, Spaten, Hacker- Pschorr, Augustiner, Hofbräu and Löwenbräu. The beer must also follow the Reinheitsgebot. At noon on the first day of Oktoberfest, the mayor of Munich kicks off the celebration by officially tapping the first beer barrel and shouting to the crowd, “O'zapft is!” meaning, “It is tapped!” The amount of beer consumed by Oktoberfest patrons is an astounding 7.5 million liters, or close to 1.98 million gallons—that's enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools! --------------------- October Meeting Homebrew Showdown Start your brewing now! Members and non-members can enter their home brewed ESB in the contest at no charge. Beers will be judged in a blind tasting by ALL present at the November meeting. November Meeting Don't miss our World Series of Beer meeting on October 12 as we sample and rate beers from breweries in the cities of teams in the MLB playoffs.
