September Meeting Notes
by Livingston Hinckley

This month’s meeting theme was a club brewing
competition for Double IPAs.  After Vince Capano’s
introduction, Jeff Levine explained the competition and

how it would be judged in a manner similar to that used
by the the Brewers Association.

All members brewed from an identical list of ingredents,
with allowances for brewing with extract malt or all-

grain.  Each brewer was allowed to be in full control of the
process, however but could only use the supplied kit with
no added fermentables or flavor substitutions.  The brewer

thus had great freedom in making his or her version of a
DIPA with creativity of process.
There were six DB15
entries, and one secret commercial brew.   The contest was

judged using the American Homebrewers’ Association
2008 guide as Style 14C(now style 22B in the 2015 guide).
In the interest of simplicity, the six judging categories,
Aroma, Appearance, Flavor, Mouthfeel and Overall
Impression were not scored to AHA standard, which
weights the categories differently based on significance, but
rather were equally weighted in order to make scoring
simpler for inexperienced judges.  There were 14 members
and guests evaluating the beer, with a maximum score of

10 points per category totaling 50 points per beer,

On this basis the scores were as follows:
6th place, Beer E - 401 points, Vince Capano
5th place, Beer B - 403 points, Jeff Levine
4th place, Beer F - 416 points, Dan Hodge
3rd place, Beer D - 428 points, Chris Johnson
2nd place, Beer A - 429 points, Liv Hinckley
1st place, Beer C - 437 points, Troegs Gentle Giant

The commercial brew is also a DIPA but did not use the
same ingredients and so was present for information only.
Therefore the 2nd 3rd and 4th place entries won Gold,
Silver and Bronze medals.   Nevertheless, the commercial
brew did top the list, something that definitely does not
always happen in our competitions.

The highest single judge’s rating was 44 out of 50 points for
Vince Capano’s entry. The lowest single rating was tied at
16 points for Beers A and E, and thereby hangs a tale...

The meeting was attended by members Dan Soboti, DJ
Soboti, Vince Capano, Jeff Levine, John Levine, Chris
Johnson, Tom Nooney, Faith Franzino, John Reid, Glen
DeLuca, and Livingston Hinckley, Nick Moramarco, Lynn
Lewis, and
non-member guests Debbie Villareal-Hadly, Mike
Hadley, Elaine Larameel, Red Hangan.

The following delicious mead and beers were generously
brought to share:Chris Johnson - Orange Blossom Mead
(aged 4 years)Faith Franzino, Tom Nooney - Anchorage
Love Buzz Saison, Cigar City-Stillwater 21st Century Means
Glen DeLuca - The Alchemist Heady Topper, Lord Hobo
