"Here and There"
by Clay Moore

We're back this month with more beer stuff.  We just got back from a 3 pub crawl -
doing research for this month's column of course - and are ready to go.

Cheers!

Making your own beer is legal in Sweden as long as it's only for personal consumption.
In Singapore, home brewing is legal but you must be at least 18 years old.  Plus you
cannot exceed making 30 liters per month.

Billy Carter, the former President's brother was, to put in kindly, enamored of beer.
One of his many quotes - "Paintings are like beer, only beer tastes good and
it's hard to stop drinking."  Ah, sure, we get it Billy.

Putting fruit in your cloudy beer is a big No-No in most of the beer world, especially
Germany.  That's not true in the USA thanks to Widmer Brewing  who reportedly
were the first to recommend that their  Weizen  and Hefe be served with a slice of
citrus.  Somehow the practice caught on and spread.

Go watch any W.C. Field movie.  After all, what's not to love about a guy who said:
"If I had to live my life over, I'd live over a saloon."

Prohibition began in 1920 and lasted until 1933.  The prohibition of home brewing
however lasted until 1979 when President Carter signed a bill making it legal.

For the dieters out there just remember beer doesn't make you fat, it makes
you lean.....against bars, tables, chairs, and poles.

According to Ben Franklin's autobiography he had a co-worker in the printing
business who drank a pint before breakfast, at breakfast, between breakfast and
dinner, at 6 PM, and one just before bed. Ben himself never joined in.

Did you know that Kieselsol is a fining agent that helps clarify your beer and prevent
unwanted odors or tastes?  Did you know that Irish Moss is another clarifying agent
that home brewers put in their work for the last fifteen minutes of the boil?
Now you know!

In Great Britain alone, 93,000 liters of beer are rumored to be lost
each year in facial hair.

“Aplenty bahl steinber horn!” means “A really great beer!” in Boontling, a folk
language developed by workers in the hop fields of California’s Anderson Valley.

Salud! Researchers at the University of Western Ontario found that micronutrients
called polyphenols in one 12-ounce (0.35-liter) bottle of beer create protective
levels of plasma antioxidants that can prevent heart disease.

Inscribed on a 19 century B.C.E. tablet:  Ninkasi you are the one who waters the
malt, you are the one who soaks the malt in a jar...... when you pour the filtered
beer of the collector vat, it is the onrush of Tigris and Euphrates."

Dave Mustaine of the bank Megadeth to rowdy fans:
If you guys are going to be throwing beer bottles at us, at leas make sure they're full.

St. Benedict (480 C.E. - 546 C.E.) founded the Benedictine order that includes the
Trappist monasteries that brew beer.  A true beer saint.

We were just thinking if the headache would only precede
the intoxication, alcoholism would be a virtue.

Our top 2 tips for cooling beer fast:
1.Add water to the ice in your cooler. Submerge the beer and you get a quick chill.
2. Add cups of salt and more ice to the cooler.  The salt will lower the freezing
temperature of the water and the extra ice will further reduce the temperature
