| Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! This truly is a special time of year when everything and everyone seems to be just a little bit nicer. That especially goes for brewers, many of whom create a special breed of brew just for the season. Whether ale, doppelbock or stout these special brews tend to be warming, rich with spice, and packed with deep flavors. Brewing a special beer for winter/Christmas started many centuries ago. Most accounts seem to agree that in Scandinavian countries brewers would create stronger and heavier beers for a mid-December festival to celebrate Jolner, a Norse god. These beers were known as Julöl. When the tradition was brought over to England, the pronunciation changed and became Yule Ale. Like their ancient ancestors, today's winter brews are heavier and richer than beers meant for drinking in warmer times. Although they're usually called Christmas or winter beers they are brewed in different styles and display dramatically different characteristics making for a drinking adventure not to be missed. And that adventure is yours in our now in progress and ongoing WINTER WONDERLAND OF BEER. |
| For example, we'll be pouring things like Delirium Noel , a rich and thick Belgian Strong Dark Ale that brings tastes of apricots soaked in dark rum, Sierra Nevada Celebration with a big hoppy bitterness and malty butterscotch notes, Troegs' Mad Elf brewed with cherries and more cherries, and the rare Scaldis Noel, a 12%, warmer with loads of sweet dark fruit, and Belgian Candy. My storage room is stocked with many great beers like these and more are still arriving. I'm changing beers almost daily so I suggest you continually check the Tap Room Beer List for the latest updates. And to answer more than a few inquiries- YES, I have received a small supply of Dogfish Head's Faithful Ale and will soon announce its pouring date on the Tap Room Beer List. Please say hello when you see me at The Tap Room as I greatly enjoy meeting the newsletter readers. Also, be sure to check www.beernexus.com; it's my favorite beer website! I know you join me in my passion for beer, the greatest beverage in the world......... Cheers! (and a happy HO-HO-HO!!) |
