A beer's IBUs (International Bittering Units) is measured with the use of a solvent
extraction and a spectrophotometer.  Note however that the scale is less reliable
in terms of relative bitterness as the numbers get higher.  For example a lager
with an IBU of 20 could taste more bitter than a stout iwth and IBU of 40 because
of the flavor intensity of each.

Vassar College was one of the first women's colleges in the USA.  Matthew Vassar
gave almost half his large fortune and over 200 acres of land to create the school in
Poughkeepsie NY.  Mr. Vassar made his money as a brewer.

For centuries cultures in So. and Central America have used corn to make beer.  
Chicha de jora is made by germinating maize (corn) to extract the malt sugars.  The
wort is then boilded and fermented in large clay  pots for days before it's boiled.

A Judge's hard drinking wife kept going up to the bar at a big party to get a
drink.  Her husband eventually said, "that's the sixth time you've been up to the
bar. Doesn't it embarrass you?  "Why should it?" she responded.  "I just
explain I'm getting them for you."

It's been a mild winter so far but just in case it has a few punches left keep this
recipe handy for a Hop Toddy - Add a dash of bourbon to a glass of a double IPA.  
Mix in a few teaspoons of honey, a squeeze of lemon juice, and a half dozen barely
crushed juniper  berries.  Serve lightly  warmed.  Repeat if there's snow to shovel.

Saison means "season" in French.  This style of beer that originated on farms
in France and in the French-speaking area of Belgium known as Wallonia.
Originally it was produced in the cooler months and consumed throughout
the farming season, these beers were made to refresh seasonal workers known
as "saisonnières" as the weather warmed up.
