Mead at June Meeting
Yes, we're going to have a meeting all about mead.
Mead is the world's oldest fermented beverage. With the
discovery of pottery vessels containing a mixture of mead,
rice and other fruits along with organic compounds of
fermentation in Northern China, archaeologists concluded
that the production of mead dates to around 7000 BC.
Mead can have a wide range of flavors, depending on the
source of the honey, additives, including fruit and spices, the
yeast employed during fermentation, and aging procedure.
The alcoholic content of mead may range from about 8%
ABV to 18%. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling, and
it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
By the way, the word MEDicine is derived from the word
MEAD. In other words, it'll cure what ales you.
And yes, beer people do enjoy and respect mead. In the
classic book "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing",
Charlie Papazian devotes an entire chapter to making
mead. So despite the fact that n the USA, mead is classified
as a wine, it's a perfect beverage for the DB15 to sample.
We will be having a special guest speaker from the award
winning meadery B. Nektar! Don't miss this unique
meeting! For more info on mead go to
