Sensory Awareness Practicum
Beer judges typically assess beer based on appearance, aroma,
flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. They look to the style
guidelines to decide how closely the brewer adheres to the
parameters that govern the description. They can pick out
off-flavors such as diacetyl, DMS, skunkiness, and cardboard.
They know that only an educated palate and keen sensory
awareness can truly appreciate the craft brewer's skills.
Our next meeting will be a unique hands on lesson in beer
sensory awareness. It will be presented by beer judges and
award winning brewers D.J. Soboti and Jeff Levine.
You owe it to yourself to come to this very special educational
tasting event. This is the only session that D.J. Soboti and Jeff
Levine will be conducting on the east coast this year.
Home Brew Challenge Winners
By every measure the DB15's May meeting had one of the finest
fields of any home brew competition in New Jersey this year.
Steam was the style and great taste was the standard. In one of
the closest voting results ever seen in our challenges three brews
emerged victorious. The gold medal went to Chris Johnson, the
silver was won by Jim Prusinowski, and the bronze was earned
by Rich Shannon. Congratulations to these great home brewers
and thanks to all who entered the contest.
