|Sept. 10 Meeting Non-Notes
The usual summary notes are not available for the Sept. 10
meeting due to the fact that the official DB15 Recording
Secretary, Beer Buyer, and Cask Commissioner, Dan
Hodge did not attend the meeting. Mr. Hodge was playing
in a parade with the world famous Mummers. An
accomplished musician Dan has been one of the leading
members of the Mummers' Aqua String Band of Philadelphia
for decades. Enjoy their award winning performance from
the Philadelphia New Year's Day Parade HERE.
The Sept. 10 meeting, featured special guest speaker Holly
Gallahger from F.X. Matt / Saranac. Holly brought several
beers for sampling during her outstanding presentation
about the history and current direction of the brewery.
Post meeting beers donated by club members proved to
be an outstanding array of world class offerings.
Although notes on the beers and who brought them
have yet to surface we heartily thank and salute those
Founded in 1888, the F.X. Matt Company,
Utica, NY, has endured Prohibition, decades of industry
consolidation and more than a century of changing tastes.
It has survived and prospered to the point where today it is
the 11th-largest craft brewer in the country and the 18th-
largest U.S. brewery overall,
F.X. Matt was the first brewery in the country to have a
license to sell after Prohibition.” As a result, a new beer
named for the company’s Prohibition-era soft drink line,
Utica Club, became the first beer sold in the USA after
Prohibition—a distinction that’s still noted on the can today.
The end of Prohibition inaugurated decades of success for
the brewery.. In 1985, they introduced Saranac Adirondack
lager which won the gold medal for best American premium
lager at the 1991 Great American Beer Festival. With that
the company put all their efforts behind the Saranac label.
That decision proved correct as Saranac, became the
brewery’s biggest brand by a large margin, to the point of
producing nearly 200,000 barrels a year.
Because of its reputation for quality and its large capacity,
the brewery has also played a key role in helping many craft
brewers expand over the years. F.X. Matt devotes about a
third of its capacity—around 130,000 barrels—to contract
brewing, a practice that dates back to 1981, when the craft
movement was first taking root.
