our move. Bring a new member to the next meeting, have them

Festival, and the Victorian Dinner. In addition members on the full
pay plan are exempt from the individual meeting beer fee which is

|August 13 Meeting
4 PM at the Gaslight
Beers from former Soviet Bloc nations
This promises to be one of the most unique meetings in the
history of the DB!5 as we revisit the days of the Cold War
via beer. Join us as we sample offerings from some of the
former Soviet Socialist Republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Belorussia (now Belarus), Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan,
Kirgiziya (now Kyrgyzstan), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia
(now Moldova), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine,
and Uzbekistan. We will also be tasting beer from some of
the former "Soviet satellite nations" - Poland, East
Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria,
Note - the exact number of beers and countries they represent cannot
be listed since we are still in the process of securing them.
Don't miss this fascinating taste experience.
Sunday August 13 at the Gaslight 4 PM
"Beer without vodka is like
throwing money to the wind"
was (and is) a popular saying in the former Soviet
Bloc countries but it doesn't mean that beer was not
consumed in large quantities for its own sake.
Since beer was technically considered a foodstuff along
with all other drinks under 10 % ABW it was readily
available. Local brands from Amstel to Efes and Baltika to
Zhiguli could be bought from street kiosks or at railway
stations, as well as from countless 24-hour corner shops,
just like fruit juice or mineral water.
Even after the breakup of the USSR things remained the
same but then change hit especially in Russia. There, in
2013, laws were passed that banned beer from being sold
by Internet retailers, street kiosks, and sports facilities. New
laws also reduced the hours when Russians could buy beer
and other alcohol - it could not be purchased in any Russian
shop between 11 PM. and 8 AM.
Moscow next raised taxes on alcohol and banned all related
advertising. Then last January, the government began
limiting the size of plastic beer bottles to a maximum of 1.5
liters and as of the summer completely banned alcohol sold
in them regardless of size. Before you say so what, please
note that beer in plastic containers -- which are cheaper to
produce than glass bottles and cans -- dominate the Russian
market. The Russian Brewers' Union estimates that 42% of
beer in Russia is sold in plastic bottles.
Members - don't forget to pick up you're complimentary
DB15 mug. Additional glasses also available
for purchase. Get another before the supply runs out.
