Why sign up for the club dues full payment plan? Enjoy the many benefits available to club members on the full-payment plan. A one time fee of only $50 covers all meetings, plus discounts for DB15 special events. This year members received benefits that totaled well over the dues amount. Substantial discounts were provided for the TAP NY beer fest trip, the Newark Bears baseball outing, the NJ Brewers Festival, and the Victorian Dinner. | ----------------------- March 10 Meeting, 4 PM Home Brew Challenge It's a homebrew contest for bock beer at our next DB15 meeting. All entrants have used the same ingredients so it will truly be a test of the brewer's skill. Everyone attending will be a taster and judge. ------------ Bock Beer Back in medieval days German monasteries would brew a strong beer for sustenance during their Lenten fasts. Some believe the name Bock came from the shortening of Einbeck thus "beck" to "bock." Others believe it is more of a pagan or old world influence that the beer was only to be brewed during the sign of the Capricorn goat, hence the goat being associated with Bock beers. The modern bock beer is a bottom fermenting lager that in general is stronger than a typical lager with more of a robust malt character. Its hop bitterness can be assertive enough to balance things but not get in the way of the malt flavor. Today there are several different styles of bock beer - Bock (the one you'll judge at the meeting), Maibock or Helles Bock, Double Bock and Eisbock. When you rate the beers at our meeting please keep in mind the style guidelines from the BJCP- "Bock beers have a complex maltiness dominated by the rich flavors of Munich and Vienna malts, which contribute melanoidins and toasty flavors. Some caramel notes may be present, hop bitterness is generally only high enough to support the malt flavors, allowing a bit of sweetness to linger into the finish. Well-attenuated, not cloying. Clean, with no esters or diacetyl, no hop flavor and no roasted or burnt character." Enjoy great beer from some of the finest home brewers in the state at our next meeting. Don't miss it! (Remember Daylight Savings Time begins on March 10) ----------------- February Meeting It was the first ever DB 15 IPA Challenge in which, 32 IPAs were grouped by region and tasted until one beer emerged as champion. The winning beer was Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA of Paso Robles, California. The well deserved worst beer was Snapperhead IPA. The meeting set a record for most beers sampled and for total meeting expenditure! As an added bonus everyone in attendance received a special selection of IPAs to take home courtesy of the DB15. As promised, it really was one of the most memorable meetings in club history! ----------------------------------- TAP-NY Trip It always sells out so get your tickets early for our April 28th trip to the "best beer fest in the East" . The entire trip package (transportation, beer on the bus, fest ticket, bagels/coffee) is included with your membership fee of $110. Remember your membership includes TAP-NY,all meetings, and huge discounts to the Victorian dinner and the baseball game! Cost of the trip for non-members is $85. --------------------- April 14 Meeting Breweriana and Beer - Every member is asked to wear something with a brewery name/insignia and bring a beer of the same kind.
