| Mohawk House to host kick-off for farmers’ market What happens when life-time farmers turn restaurant owners? Besides the knowledge of how to use fresh area produce and farm goods in their everyday menus, the work ethic and commitment necessary to be successful is farm-bred as well. Mohawk House restaurant owners Steve and Rachel Scro still tend their Sussex County farm, as well as run their restaurant. They understand the joys and blessings of farming, as well as the struggles and challenges it brings. As such, they have devoted themselves to supporting local farmers and to raising awareness of the plentiful, fresh, locally grown foods available to consumers all over Sussex County. To help kick-off the 2012 Sparta Farmers Market, which opens this Saturday, June 2, The Mohawk House has teamed up with the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall to host an event at the restaurant next Thursday, June 7. The evening will feature live music from audience favorite, The Nerds. The Mohawk House Chef, Ken Salmon, will be grilling summer favorites on the outdoor grill. The evening will also feature celebrity cigar-roller Tony Santana who will demonstrate his craft and share samples for cigar aficionados. Radio station 103.7 FM will be broadcasting the evening live. Tickets for the event are $15 and partial proceeds from the evening will benefit local farmers. Scro said Eric Neilson, owner of the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and the dealership’s general manager, Bill Snouffer, have been very instrumental in helping with the event and have been very generous in their support of local farmers. Both businesses will be giving out 'green dollars' to their patrons throughout the summer. These can then be redeemed for products at the Sparta Farmers Market which will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 27 in the Sparta Municipal Building parking lot on Main Street. Ben Del Coro, who is one of the coordinators and organizers of the Sparta Farmers Market along with Mitch Morrison, said the market has grown by 100 percent in only its second year. He said they began last year with only 12 to 14 vendors and now there will be over 25 vendors every week. Del Coro said on the second Saturday of each month the Farmers Market will have an arts and crafts featuring over 40 vendors. Del Coro, a Sparta resident, said, “It’s about building community. People can shop locally and support their neighbors, as well as get the healthiest and freshest foods.” Scro said he and Neilson plan to team up again in the near future to host events that will benefit the community. He said, “Eric and I have been very fortunate and successful at what we do and we’re happy to support people we believe in. That’s how we feel about the farmers.” (From the Sparta Independent) |
