| Gold Medal Celebration Nearly an hour after the Canadians won their third consecutive Olympic gold medal with a 2-0 win over the Americans, the players came back out on the ice in the near-empty arena, smoking cigars and swigging beer. (Rebecca Johnston even tried to drive the Zamboni.) "I don't think it's a good promotion of sport values," Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympics, told the Associated Press after learning about the celebration. "If they celebrate in the changing room, that's one thing, but not in public. We will investigate what happened." Despite Mr. Felli's concerns, BeerNexus salutes the Canadian team especially for choosing beer over champagne to celebrate. Minister of Pubs The British government has appointed a minister of pubs, who will be in charge of trying to slow the rate at which pubs are closing. Wentworth MP John Healey, will head a five-minister task force. The Morning Advertiser reports he is considering tax breaks for pubs and giving tenants the right to buy pubs from landlords if they are threatened with closure. British Beer and Pub Association said the rate of pub closures is now at 39 a week. |
