The malternative beverage known as Zima,
introduced by Coors Brewing in 1992, is soon
to be discontinued. The last shipment will be
in December as distributors deplete current
inventories on a first come, first serve basis.
Andy England, CMO of MillerCoors, cited the
challenging malternative segment sales and
declining consumer interest as reasons for
discontinuing the brand. He made no mention
of the fact that Zima tasted like a boozed 7 UP.

Pumpkin styles are the fastest growing of the
seasonal beers. The average distributor
carries between four to six pumpkin beers, up
from two last year.Dogfish Head Craft
Brewery's Punkin Ale sold 400 cases last
year. This year, they expect to sell over 1,000
cases. O'Fallon Brewery in Missouri has
increased the number of cases made from
3000 to 10,000 cases this year. Larger beer
companies have joined the craze with
Anheuser-Busch's Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale
and MillerCoors' Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale.

Tripel Karmeliet was named the “World’s Best
Ale” at the World Beer Awards. It's a historical
3 grain” beer, using barley, wheat and oats,
and is refermented in the bottle. The recipe
originated in a Carmelite monastery in 1679.
Today it is brewed according to the same
recipe at the Bosteels Brewery, Belgium.
Buddhist monks in Thailand used over
one million glass beer bottles to build a

The monks used brown Chang Beer
bottles and green Heineken bottles to
create textures and patterns in the walls
that "beautifully reflect the Thai sun."
Local people brought the building
materials to the monks, presumably
after thoughtfully emptying them of
their contents.

Morphine Home Brew
A Santa Cruz graduate student has
pleaded no contest to heroin possession
after police said they found
morphine-laced beer in his garage.
Chad Renzelman said he used "a
handful" of dried poppy pods to flavor a
batch of homemade beer in August.
The organic chemistry student at the
University of California, Santa Cruz said
he extracted opium from the poppies,
which he then converted to morphine.
He said the beer was for home
consumption and that he didn't know
his actions were illegal.
