|Slow Sales = New Recipe
Boston Beer Company today has reformulated their recipe for
Samuel Adams Rebel IPA. It now features the popular
Mosaic hop variety as well as a new grain bill void of caramel
malt. It’s the first time in Boston Beer’s 32-year history that
the company has “significantly changed” the recipe of a
flagship beer, according to founder Jim Koch, and it comes
just three years after the product was first introduced
nationally. Why? After debuting with strong revenues, sales
of Rebel dropped 23 percent last.
Bar Carts Removed
The Metro-North Railroad (NY) shut down all it's bar carts
recently amid an investigation into missing money among
he vendors. Officials of the Metro-North which runs the
railroad, say the beer carts — 18 of them, and two stationary
“commissary counters” — are not returning until the
investigation is over. The railroad’s special bar cars, where
commuters could buy a beer on board and commiserate
over their day, ended their run in 2014, though some groups
are lobbying to bring them back, so far with little success.
Still, Grand Central Station (NY) and the trains departing its
platforms have not exactly gone dry.. Commuters can still
buy beer and wine at plenty of shops in the station, though
the bar carts were the favored option for those arriving with
only a few moments to spare. The bar carts continually
moved in areas near the trains so commuters could literally
take one with them for the road.
|You don't say.....
For the third straight year, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax
and Trade Bureau issued more than 1,000 new brewery
permits, bringing the total number of permitted U.S.
breweries to a record high of 7,190 Jan. 2017.
California had the most permitted breweries in the U.S., at
927, and Washington, D.C., had the fewest with 13.
At Boulder, Colorado’s Upslope Brewing Co. excess rinse
water from the brewery’s canning line is put in jugs lined
with green algae. The algae uses carbon dioxide and other
waste byproducts of fermentation as food. The algae is
harvested and sold to make a 100-% biodegradable green ink
Egg-shaped concrete fermentation tanks are the new thing in
breweries across the country. That’s because concrete, like
wood, is porous, allowing tiny amounts of oxygen to
contact the beer to move fermentation and aging along.
Beer in America is a $250 billion-per-year business.
Craft breweries and brewpubs have been hit with scores of
lawsuits in the last three years. The majority of claims
alleging failure to pay all wages due at termination, and
failure to pay overtime wages.
Women are surging into a 32 percent share of the overall
craft beer market (Nielsen Report), while women ages 21-
34 compose a full 15 percent of overall craft drinking
volume (Brewer’s Association).

“Isn’t beer the holy libation of sincerity? The potion
that dispels all hypocrisy. The drink that does
nothing worse than incite its fans to urinate in all
innocence, to gain weight in all frankness?”
“I’ve only been in love with a beer bottle

“Beer’s intellectual. What a shame so
many idiots drink it.”
