Pop Tart Beer

If you thought a beer based on Wheaties was
offbeat, you ain’t seen nothing yet. San
Francisco brewer 21st Amendment is upping
the ante with Toaster Pastry, an India Red Ale
that’s an homage to Pop-Tarts.  The beer, at
7.6% alcohol by volume, will be available in 19.2
oz. cans – a new (and permanent) size for the
brewery’s seasonal offerings.

General Mills, which worked with Fulton Beer to
launch HefeWheaties, has already got its next
breakfast concoction in the works. Colorado’s
Black Bottle Brewery will work with the
company to bring back its Count Chocula-
flavored beer. The beer debuted last year, when
Black Bottle employees bought nearly every
available box of the seasonal cereal from the
grocery stores in Fort Collins, Co. to make the
inaugural batch. (General Mills will supply the
cereal to the brewer this year.)

The Count Chocula beer was hardly an
aberration for the brewer. It’s Cerealiously line
of beers has previous included Honey Bunches
of Oats, Golden Grahams and Cinnamon Toast
Crunch. (the brewer puts the cereal in a bag to
prevent pieces from getting into the beer – in a
procedure that’s similar to dry hopping.)
“We decided to do a milk stout as the base,”
says Sean Nook, founder of Black Bottle. “And I
was like ‘I want to put cereal in it and change it
up.’It tastes more like chocolate than it does
cereal, but it’s still a beer.”
You don't say.....

Flat 12 Bierwerks has launched a “dog brew,” a non-
alcoholic beer made especially for your canine companions.
The dog beer is made using meat bones and trimmings.
Brewers create a stock with bones, carrots, potatoes, and
brewer’s yeast. The stock simmers for hours before it is
blended with wort. It's not available on tap, just bottles.

Long before the Germans gave us the lager, colonial
brewers were harvesting pumpkins for their mashes,
creating a proletariat brew. Love it or hate it, pumpkin beer
is probably the most American beer you can drink.
-----------
Pumpkin beers make up t3% of the overall craft volume —
impressive for a beer around for only about 13 weeks

California. Oregon, Washington and Colorado had more than
705 breweries combined. That’s 8% of U.S. states
accounting for nearly a third of the nation’s brewing
facilities. Vermont, with its 40 breweries, has more
breweries per 100,000 adults (8.6) than any state.

Three students and a barman recntly climbed to the summit
of Britain’s highest mountain with a barrel of ale and set up
a bar. They spent nearly four hours hauling the nine-gallon
cask of beer to the top of Ben Nevis in Scotland along with
bottles, mats and glasses to create the pop-up bar to serve
climbers at the 4,408ft (1,344-metre) summit.
