|Italian Lentil Beer
An absence of old-world tradition has given
Italy's craft brewers the freedom to create
bizarre beers with ingredients as strange as
myrrh, pomegranate, black rice and clams.
Our beer taster Sandy Feld recently tried three
unusual brews from Italy - Equilibrista by Birra
del Borgo is half Chianti grape juice and half
beer that is fermented like champagne. "In a
blind test most will not recognise whether it is
wine or beer." Mastrai Birrai Umbri create Cotta
74 which is "distinguished by the use of "Italian
lentil" and is a dark malty beer with caramel and
dark chocolate notes. Grado Plato's
Chocarrubica is brewed with carob, oats and
cocoa beans with "a creaminess almost like a
cup of steaming hot chocolate"
Female Rules British Beer
The reigning Brewer of the Year in 2013,
(awarded by the British Guild of Beer Writers) is
Sara Barton, who owns and runs Brewster's
Brewery in Lincolnshire, was the first woman to
ever win the award in its 20-year history.
Brewing s coming full circle, say historians. The
earliest evidence of beer in Britain dates back
roughly 4,000 years and women were the
primary brewers from the start. The success of
brewsters has been matched by an increase in
the number of women drinking beer. The
number trying real ale for example has jumped
from 14% to 34% in the past three years,
according to the Campaign For Real Ale
(Camra). Women now account for 22% of its
|You don't say.....
Russia took its Olympic healthy streak well beyond what the
charter requires. Not only was there no beer sold at Sochi’s
Olympic venues, there are no fried foods, no hot dogs
(Russians love hot dogs!) and no potato chips. The snack
stands were selling brioche at the stadium along with
cucumber and turkey sandwiches.
A bottle of spirits is marked up about 300 %; wine, 200 %t,
beer is even more, depending on whether it's bottled or on
tap. A bottled beer could be marked up 400% while a draft
might be 600 %. And the cheaper the wine, the greater the
profit compared to a more expensive vintage
With a few exceptions, beer is not made to be kept for long
periods, particularly the beer sold in cans. It can go stale and
flat if kept for too long, so always read the ‘best by’ or ‘use
by’ dates. Bottled beers with corks should be stored
horizontally to keep the cork moist. Beers with crown caps
should be stored upright.in a cool place, away from sunlight..
Only about 5 % of the U.S. population ever buys wine over
$20 despite the fact that the USA is the world's largest wine
market. About 35 % of American adults don't drink at all;
another 21 % drink beer or spirits, but not wine.
Only 15 % of the U.S. adult population drinks wine
more than once a week.
Top 5 breweries in the world 2014 according to RateBeer:
#1. AleSmith Brewing Company, San Diego,California ;
#2- Hill Farmstead Brewery, Greensboro,Vermont
;#3-Three Floyds Brewing Company, Munster, Indiana;
#4- Russian River Brewing, Santa Rosa, California;#5-Bells
Brewery, Galesburg Michigan. Needless to say the
absence of any breweries outside of the USA
makes the list just a tad suspect.
